Spain has officially begun a program to build a pilot plant that will test the use of hydrogen in industrial processes. The public-private project, called Hydrogen Hub Asturias (H2Asturias), is led by ArcelorMittal.

The facility, located within the steelworks gas laboratory (GasLab) at the Gijón plant, features a 1.2 megawatt furnace.

“This project involves the production of H2 at low temperatures from renewable energy sources, as well as its use in the industrial sector to reduce emissions and as a chemical agent,” explains Cristina Laucin, senior scientist for green energy and CO2 at ArcelorMittal Global R&D in Spain . who is leading the project.

The investment is valued at €6.6 million ($7.18 million) and covers all stages of the hydrogen value chain, from its production, storage and transportation to use as a reductant or alternative fuel to natural gas.
